Mediation | Family Disputes | Barrister
My professional practice incorporates an awareness of dualities, the depths of issues at the core of the dispute as well as the superficial. Each party has strengths and vulnerabilities. As humans we embody within us aspects which bring us both light and darkness. Acceptance of our strengths and vulnerabilities puts us in a position to progress, to evolve. Moving from dispute to resolution takes courage. Encouraging disputing parties to honestly communicate and be patient with each other is a talent. These are keys to unravelling complicated issues and emotions that people in dispute often have. Things can be easier when they are simplified. Opening up in a professionally safe environment, with respectful communications without feeling uncomfortable, can simplify the life of a person who is embroiled in a dispute. When everyone involved knows where they stand with each other, it can create the best vantage point to all parties for discussions to commence and flow towards a resolution.
Sometimes, we need to do a bit of reality testing, especially when it comes to what is going on with our families. Sometimes we need to look for workable solutions instead of resorting to hopelessness or hostility or worse, litigation.
The first thing you need to ask yourself is whether Mediation is right for your dispute? Before you proceed, find out if mediation is right for the parties in your dispute. My mediation service is available to you through your solicitor (as well as directly to members of the public). If you would like more information, please complete the form under the ‘CONTACT’ tab in the menu above. Feel free to ask for a callback to have a discussion about the issues that will relate to the conduct of your prospective mediation.
I was admitted in January 2006 to the Supreme Court of Queensland and to the High Court of Australia in August 2006; I hold a Bachelor of Laws 2005 and a Master of Laws 2008 both from the Queensland University of Technology.
Life experience matters to people in dispute. With over 15 years’ experience as a legal professional, I am highly regarded as a Mediator, Family Dispute Resolutionist and Barrister. Previously a solicitor, I worked in property, estates, commercial, family and civil litigation. The practice of family law requires a comprehensive understanding of how other facets of law intertwine with the individual’s particular legal dilemma.
I am a qualified trainer and current sessional academic at QUT.
I have trained colleagues, coached mediators and assessed family law in practical legal training courses.
My practice encompasses 15 years as a family lawyer, initially as a solicitor. My background lies in the nursing profession, predominantly in elder care and also children.
Other areas of my practice include Elder law, Estates, Civil litigation and Human Rights.
I genuinely respect people from all walks of life, and coupled with my professional experience and background, this generates in dispute resolution, exceptional communication skills.
The simplest approach, as well as keeping people focused and on track are keys to successful outcomes. I am easy to talk to and definitely a “people person”.
Expect communication skills which are inclusive of people from diverse backgrounds. Expect the ability to interact with and serve a diverse variety of people within our community. My legal expertise in private practice, is enhanced by my quite recent service part time in the community sector.
Online mediation means that you can participate in a mediation despite any restrictions that are imposed on our movements if health directives are issued. Online mediation can be conducted from a smart device, laptop or desktop computer as long as you have an inbuilt camera and sufficient, reliable data supply. Throughout the pandemic I have been based in Brisbane, and I have been providing Dispute Resolution and Barrister services to clients located throughout Australia, in person, online and by phone.
Mediation and litigation bookings are available on business days, Monday to Friday between 8:30am and 5pm.
Memberships: Family Law Practitioners Association of Queensland, Law Council of Australia Family Law Section, Women Lawyers Association of Queensland; Child Protection Practitioners Association of Queensland; Bar Association of Queensland; Australian Lawyers for Human Rights.
If you choose mediation, I take your details to check for conflicts of interest and I will then arrange to conduct intakes. Please remember that intake sessions take time. If you proceed with a mediation, be prepared to allow some time for each party’s separate intake session otherwise known as a pre-Mediation conference. I encourage you to engage fully with the pre-Mediation conference because putting in the effort to understand mediation process will serve you well.
I will spend up to 1 hour separately with each party for a pre-Mediation conference, especially for complex matters.
You will gain so much more from the mediation process if you feel that you understand what the process is about beforehand. The pre-Mediation conference is an opportunity for you to ask questions and clarify anything you don’t understand.
Parties choose between a Full day (8 hours) or Half day (4 hours).
I updated my fee schedule on 1 January 2024 and your enquiry about my fees is welcome.
I can usually arrange to conduct an pre-Mediation conference within a few days and have the mediation ready to take place within a week or a few (depending on prior bookings and materials to be perused).
